Educational Leaders in Public Schools

Educational Leaders in Public Schools

Public schools are well known for careful stratification and segregation of age groups. Public schools are so poorly run (take DPS for example) that all of those kids run across the county line to attend any school that will accept them. These kids are so far behind academically because of the crap that DPS taught or didn’t teach, that they will never be academically successful.

Public schools are not required to answer to parents, but they do need to heed the words of politicians and school boards-all of whom have their own political agendas. It would not be an exaggeration to say that these agendas are weakening the entire system.

Public schools are operated at the state level through departments of education, and locally by school districts and publicly elected or appointed school boards. Approximately 15,000 different school districts operate in the United States, and most are run by counties.

Educational leaders have focused in recent years on providing safe and disciplined school environments for students and teachers. Many schools have increased expulsions of violent students by adopting “zero tolerance policies” toward serious offenders. Education outcomes become irrelevant. Educators and parents can post a “viewpoint” page on the site that acts as an online profile, and they can participate in discussion forums, share links and resources, and review teaching materials.

Education reformers and policymakers who consider higher academic standards a centerpiece of their movement should not count on teachers to be a driving force, added Wadsworth. It may be that the academic energies of even the most motivated teachers are sapped by what they consider to be the stressful day-to-day demands of the classroom. Education costs have been rising faster than inflation. Many parents want, but cannot afford, these private alternatives. Educating for citizenship, work and the public good has been replaced with models of schooling in which students, especially poor minority youth, are viewed narrowly either as a threat or as perpetrators of violence. When not viewed as potential criminals, they are positioned as infantilized potential victims of crime (on the Internet, at school and in other youth spheres) who must endure modes of governing that are demeaning and repressive.

Educators must recover their higher motivation, a spirituality that comes from faith not in religion but in civilization, humanity’s sanctuary from the cruel vortex of nature. Educational alternatives would be unlimited. It would be the source of enormous progress, and a model for the nation.

3 Grades of Chemicals for Thames Kosmos Chemistry Sets

3 Grades of Chemicals for Thames Kosmos Chemistry Sets

Chemistry sets from brands like Thames Kosmos, Scientific Explorer and Powertech provide children with hours of educational entertainment. The great thing about these sets is they provide all the chemicals and materials required to conduct the experiments. But what do you do when the chemicals have all been used?

Walmart seems to have just about everything but have you ever found the chemicals aisle? Not only are chemicals hard to find but who even knows what to buy? This article explains the difference between 3 grades of chemicals so you can know the right chemicals for your next school experiment, homework assignment or science fair project.

Chemistry sets can awaken an interest in chemistry and the physical world, setting children on a path to a future career. Even the most basic chemistry sets are filled with experiments that will peak and keep the interest of children who already have a basic scientific interest or knowledge, or those who are absolute beginners. Chemistry experiments are designed to teach things like air pressure and water tension, and how everyday things function. Some of the experiments work with benign objects, while others require chemicals.

Not all the experiments found in chemistry sets like the Thames Kosmos series require the use of chemicals. For those that do, it’s good to know what you’re working with, and what your choices are when you need to purchase chemicals.

Most chemicals are graded, the grade representing the purity of the chemical. A chemical with a higher grade has fewer impurities, or other chemicals, such as metals and water, than those with a lower grade. The cost of chemicals is in keeping with its grade: a higher grade is more expensive than lower grades.

Although there are several different protocols for grading chemicals, there are three basic grades that are the most common and most likely to be used. They are, from highest to lowest, reagent grade, laboratory grade, and technical grade.

Reagent grade, also known as ACS, is the highest chemical grade there is, meaning it is the most pure. It meets or exceeds American Chemical Society standards. Chemicals graded as reagent grade can be used in all situations, from scientific to manufacturing. It is the only chemical grade that can be used in biological experiments.

Laboratory grade chemicals, which may also be referred to as lab, are less pure than reagent grade chemicals, but are still of a fairly high purity. These chemicals would not be pure enough to use in medical or food products, but they are usually more than adequate for science fair projects.

Technical grade chemicals are also called industrial grade, and are the least pure chemicals. Chemicals of this grade are typically used in industrial or commercial applications, but may be adequate for some science fair projects. These chemicals are not acceptable for use in food or medicinal purposes.

If your experiment has stringent requirements for chemical purity, your best bet would be purchasing from a chemical supply house where you can be assured of the grade of chemical you are purchasing. If you are unsure of what grade is needed for a particular experiment, laboratory grade is a safe choice.

So now that you have a handle on that, where do you go to find the chemicals you need? You don’t have to buy chemistry sets to get more chemicals. You can actually purchase just the chemicals at various stores (hardware store, drug store, even the grocery store) rather than a chemical supply house. However, before you get excited about that, there is a problem. When you buy from these types of stores, the chemicals are unlikely to be graded and may contain an unacceptable level of impurities for the experiment being performed.

Now you can buy the right chemical with confidence that it will get the job done. Having the proper chemicals allows you to successfully conduct experiments. It also allows you to replenish the supply of chemicals in your old Thames Kosmos chemistry sets so you can blow the dust off of the set and put it back to good use.

how anyone

How Anyone Who Knows How to Type Can Write an Article in 30 Minutes or Less
It seems that one of the fastest growing recommendations flying around the net these days is about writing articles.
Of course as something starts to pick up momentum it brings forth a myriad of products, all wanting your hard earned cash.
Recently I picked up a product by Melanie Mendelson called The 30 Minute Article Writing System.
In The 30 Minute Article Writing System Melanie teaches a step by step system for creating articles on virtually any topic in 30 minutes or less. Instead of just giving you more content you are given a clearly defined set of steps and a time limit for each one’s completion.
Although the system is straight forward the largest obstacle would be the system assumes you have some knowledge of the topic you are writing about.
This is easily overcome with some quick search engine research on your topic, however if you’re not very versed in your topic it will take you more than 30 minutes factoring in research time.
Melanie Mendelson, although she has only been working online for a little more than 3 years has been able to create a full time income for herself.
Creating her own products, Melanie uses article writing as her top strategy for attracting customers.
In The 30 Minute Article Writing System I found the simplicity of the system to be its most powerful quality. Knowing the exact step to take and having a pre determined time limit for its completion keeps your article writing on track.
The system is powerful enough to have you create very well written articles even though you may have very limited knowledge on the subject of your article.
Using the program definitely eliminates any type of writers block.
There is also a huge list of sites included in the book for submitting your articles to for massive exposure.
Although the information is not new the way Melanie presents it in a clearly defined system is rare and very refreshing even for someone who has never written an article in their life.
I must admit I was a little skeptical about the following sentence from Melanie’s sales letter:
If you are a complete novice, you will be churning out articles like you’ve been doing it all your life.
However after going through the system I can see where she has the proof to back this statement.
Understanding that The 30 Minute Article Writing System is designed to be a quick system for writing articles, I do wish Melanie would have maybe touched somewhat on the subject of quick research for topics you might not be familiar with.
After purchasing the product and using it I believe that everything stated in the original sales letter was true and I was left with no unanswered questions or concerns.
If you are at all interested in attracting more search engine traffic or publicity to your business or affiliate programs, then this article system should prove very helpful.
An informative article can draw huge amounts of traffic to your website and business and I would give this product a 7 out of 10 recommendation to help you with your article writing.

The Success And Demand Of High Definition Technology

The Success And Demand Of High Definition Technology
Emerging home theater technology is booming, despite a lagging economy. It seems people would rather change their travel habits, use less gas, and even eat a little less than give up their electronics devices.
The introduction of high definition capabilities by national television cable and satellite companies to the mass market has given the public an impression of high definition being a necessary luxury.
One satellite company has even added the feature of all high definition programming to push stations to give more high definition offerings. With all high definition programming, subscribers will not receive any stations in standard definitions. This is the first step to a full high definition conversion that will take only a few years to implement.
One underlying idea that no one seems to have noticed is that high definition only television setups may be a more expensive proposition for independent broadcasters, creating a situation where only a select few control the output of the media. This notion is sure to upset free speech advocates who understand that free speech is useless if situations ensure that no one will hear you.
Fortunately high definition broadcast technology will likely become less expensive and more realistic as time goes on, just as any other technology does. I suppose we all remember when camcorder and home video technology was unaffordable for anyone but the very wealthy. There was the same situation with the personal computer, and now that technology is considered to be so basic that world education experts are trying to get laptops to educators and students in third world countries.
The middle class is the driving force behind high definition technology. New advances have created a posh society of people with a sense of entitlement. Each person feels they deserve the latest technology. Along with this crowd comes the people who feel they are entitled to the technology, but are entitled to receive it free or at low cost. Television companies are seeing an influx of consumers demanding free high definition receivers at no cost to them. The reasoning given is almost always due to which service they use and comes with threats to switch to a different television service. While this sense of entitlement is not good for the economy, consumers thinking only of themselves are hesitant to abandon such selfish measures.
When high definition capabilities are in each of our homes, what will they come out with next? Will advances in medical technology surpass that of social and entertainment technology?

[edit] History

[edit] Gart Sports

The Gart Sports name has been synonymous with the top tier of sporting goods retailers in the United States for decades. The Gart tradition started in 1928, when Denver Post newspaper carrier Nathan Gart started the company with $50 in fishing rod samples.

In 1971, Gart Sports Company opened its first "Superstore" with the opening of the "Sportscastle" store in Denver, Colorado at the corner of 10th Avenue and Broadway. The 1980s proved to be an exciting time for the company, during which the company grew through a series of acquisitions. These mergers included Hagan's Sports Ltd. (1987) and Stevens Brown of Salt Lake City (1987). In the fall of 1992, Leonard Green & Partners acquired Thrifty and became the company's largest shareholder.

[edit] Sportmart

At the same time that Gart Sports Company opened the Sportscastle, the Hochberg family and the Cantor family opened their first Sportmart in Niles, Illinois. The company grew to 60 stores in nine states. Gart Sports and Sportmart merged in 1998.

[edit] Oshman's

Oshman's was opened in 1919 when Jake Oshman opened the first Oshman's Sporting Goods store. By 1965, Jake Oshman had built his business to become the largest sporting goods chain in Texas. The company operated 43 Oshman's SuperSports USA stores and 15 traditional stores when it merged with Gart Sports Company in 2001.

[edit] Sports Authority

The Sports Authority, Inc. was founded in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida by a syndicate of Venture Capital Groups and several key Founding Executives. Jack A. Smith, formerly COO of Herman's World of Sports, CEO; Roy M. Cohen, Sr VP and General Merchandise Manager; Richard Lynch, Sr.VP and CFO and Arnold Sedel, VP of Stores Operations were the Founding Executives. The VC syndicate was led by William Blair Venture Partners and included First Chicago Venture Partners, Bain Capital, Phillips-Smith Venture Partners, Marquette Venture Partners, and Bessemer Securities.

The Sports Authority, Inc. opened its first store in November 1987 in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. In 1990, with approximately nine stores in six states, the company was acquired by Kmart. Five years later, The Sports Authority had expanded to 136 stores in 26 states, and was spun-off from parent Kmart.

[edit] Gart Sports merge with Sports Authority

Gart Sports, which also operated Oshman's and Sportmart, completed a "merger of equals" with Sports Authority on August 4, 2003. At the time of its merger with Gart Sports Company, The Sports Authority was the largest full-line sporting goods retailer in the United States, and had 205 stores in 33 states. The combined company took the Sports Authority name. With the merger, each share of Sports Authority was exchanged with 0.37 shares of Gart Sports which gave investors in each about 50% of the new merchant. The new company is based in Englewood, Colorado, which was the home of Gart Sports.

As of May 2006, the remaining stores that were not operating under the Sports Authority name re-branded to the Sports Authority name. There are no longer any stores operating under the name of Gart Sports, Sportmart or Oshman's.

[edit] Copeland Sports

In August 2006, Copeland Sports, headquartered out of San Luis Obispo, California filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. On November 17, 2006, Sports Authority, through a wholly-owned subsidiary, assumed the leasehold interests in seven former Copeland Sports retail store locations.

[edit] 2006 Leveraged Buyout by Leonard Green & Partners

In January 2006, Sports Authority agreed to be purchased in a leveraged buyout by affiliates of Leonard Green & Partners, a private equity investment firm, in a transaction valued at $1.4 billion.[1] Shareholders approved the deal in May 2006. Upon completion of the merger, Sports Authority ceased to be a publicly-listed stock. The subordinated financing for the deal was a private mezzanine loan from TCW/Crescent Mezzanine LLC. Thus, no public bonds are outstanding and Sports Authority no longer files financial statements with the SEC.

[edit] Brands

Sports Authority sells different brands of sporting goods from many different vendors. The company also sells products under its own private labels, including Alpine Design (which makes up a majority of clothing and outdoor goods), Aspire (women's sportswear), Golf Day (Golf goods), Tour Collection (Golf), Parkside (outdoor games and trampolines) and Bodyfit by Sports Authority (fitness accessories). Many of these products are made by other manufacturers and branded with the Sports Authority private labels.
