Public schools are well known for careful stratification and segregation of age groups. Public schools are so poorly run (take DPS for example) that all of those kids run across the county line to attend any school that will accept them. These kids are so far behind academically because of the crap that DPS taught or didn’t teach, that they will never be academically successful.

Public schools are not required to answer to parents, but they do need to heed the words of politicians and school boards-all of whom have their own political agendas. It would not be an exaggeration to say that these agendas are weakening the entire system.

Public schools are operated at the state level through departments of education, and locally by school districts and publicly elected or appointed school boards. Approximately 15,000 different school districts operate in the United States, and most are run by counties.

Educational leaders have focused in recent years on providing safe and disciplined school environments for students and teachers. Many schools have increased expulsions of violent students by adopting “zero tolerance policies” toward serious offenders. Education outcomes become irrelevant. The Gart Sports name has been synonymous with the top tier of sporting goods retailers in the United States for decades. The Gart tradition started in 1928, when Denver Post newspaper carrier Nathan Gart started the company with $50 in fishing rod samples.

In 1971, Gart Sports Company opened its first "Superstore" with the opening of the "Sportscastle" store in Denver, Colorado at the corner of 10th Avenue and Broadway. The 1980s proved to be an exciting time for the company, during which the company grew through a series of acquisitions. These mergers included Hagan's Sports Ltd. (1987) and Stevens Brown of Salt Lake City (1987). In the fall of 1992, Leonard Green & Partners acquired Thrifty and became the company's largest shareholder.

At the same time that Gart Sports Company opened the Sportscastle, the Hochberg family and the Cantor family opened their first Sportmart in Niles, Illinois. The company grew to 60 stores in nine states. Gart Sports and Sportmart merged in 1998.

Oshman's was opened in 1919 when Jake Oshman opened the first Oshman's Sporting Goods store. By 1965, Jake Oshman had built his business to become the largest sporting goods chain in Texas. The company operated 43 Oshman's SuperSports USA stores and 15 traditional stores when it merged with Gart Sports Company in 2001.

The Sports Authority, Inc. was founded in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida by a syndicate of Venture Capital Groups and several key Founding Executives. Jack A. Smith, formerly COO of Herman's World of Sports, CEO; Roy M. Cohen, Sr VP and General Merchandise Manager; Richard Lynch, Sr.VP and CFO and Arnold Sedel, VP of Stores Operations were the Founding Executives. The VC syndicate was led by William Blair Venture Partners and included First Chicago Venture Partners, Bain Capital, Phillips-Smith Venture Partners, Marquette Venture Partners, and Bessemer Securities.

The Sports Authority, Inc. opened its first store in November 1987 in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. In 1990, with approximately nine stores in six states, the company was acquired by Kmart. Five years later, The Sports Authority had expanded to 136 stores in 26 states, and was spun-off from parent Kmart.

Gart Sports, which also operated Oshman's and Sportmart, completed a "merger of equals" with Sports Authority on August 4, 2003. At the time of its merger with Gart Sports Company, The Sports Authority was the largest full-line sporting goods retailer in the United States, and had 205 stores in 33 states. The combined company took the Sports Authority name. With the merger, each share of Sports Authority was exchanged with 0.37 shares of Gart Sports which gave investors in each about 50% of the new merchant. The new company is based in Englewood, Colorado, which was the home of Gart Sports.

As of May 2006, the remaining stores that were not operating under the Sports Authority name re-branded to the Sports Authority name. There are no longer any stores operating under the name of Gart Sports, Sportmart or Oshman's.

In August 2006, Copeland Sports, headquartered out of San Luis Obispo, California filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. On November 17, 2006, Sports Authority, through a wholly-owned subsidiary, assumed the leasehold interests in seven former Copeland Sports retail store locations.

In January 2006, Sports Authority agreed to be purchased in a leveraged buyout by affiliates of Leonard Green & Partners, a private equity investment firm, in a transaction valued at $1.4 billion.^[1] Shareholders approved the deal in May 2006. Upon completion of the merger, Sports Authority ceased to be a publicly-listed stock. The subordinated financing for the deal was a private mezzanine loan from TCW/Crescent Mezzanine LLC. Thus, no public bonds are outstanding and Sports Authority no longer files financial statements with the SEC.

Sports Authority sells different brands of sporting goods from many different vendors. The company also sells products under its own private labels, including Alpine Design (which makes up a majority of clothing and outdoor goods), Aspire (women's sportswear), Golf Day (Golf goods), Tour Collection (Golf), Parkside (outdoor games and trampolines) and Bodyfit by Sports Authority (fitness accessories). This is no time to cut corners and be a cheapskate. You may be hurting for money right now, but the course of action you take at this moment will determine your success in the future.

You know by now that you need a website; this means you’ll need a domain, hosting, and design. You also need an auto-responder, and advertising (so people can find their way to your site). Most people look online for the cheapest possible deals and ways of skirting around monthly fees. Why would you want to pay someone for using their services, when you can get them for free? Well, I’ll tell you that if you want to achieve massive home based business success, then it’s better (in the long run) to actually pay for some of the services you’ll need

You want to use their services for convenience, stability, and reputation. If you go with an extremely cheap domain company and hosting account, then that is the type of service you’ll receive. They may have no technical support and a lot of downtime. You may have issues with your account, lost domain information, and countless other problems. Your best bet is to find a good domain service (like godaddy or namecheap) and a quality hosting company (like hostgator). You still shouldn’t pay more than $15/year for domains and no more than $10/month for a host (for start-up sites that is).

Proper website design is very important for achieving home based business success. For your website design, sure you could do it yourself if you know how to build sites. Or you could install wordpress and start blogging, or you could hire a website designer and have them take care of it for you. This way your site looks professional and you look like you should be taken seriously. You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on a site design. Shop around. Typically local businesses charge more, and if your best friend’s daughter’s best friend says she can design it.. that’s nice. But don’t mix business and friendship. Hire someone you don’t know, this way you can boss them around or tell them you don’t like something without hurting their feelings.

Next… your auto-responder. This is one of those investments that you make now that will pay off in the future. You can try using the auto-responder that comes with your host (which I DO NOT recommend) or you could try one of those freebie online versions. And there’s some cheap services out there. Remember though, you get what you pay for. You may lose addresses, they may not back-up their information, you may not be able to transfer if you change your mind, and you may have slow deliverability or none at all.

Take my advice and get a quality auto-responder now (like aweber or icontact). Build that up and use it. Work that much harder to pay covering the cost of it if it’s bothering you that much.

When driving traffic to your website, tools like Google Adwords and article/video submission are priceless. Some advertising can be free and that may be the only real thing you can be a cheapskate on (for now). But paying for traffic (or tools that help drive traffic) is something that all of us home based business entrepreneurs have to do!

Establishing you and your website in the beginning may not be easy, but if you use a combination of SEO, social media, and other marketing tools, you should be able to get your site noticed. Once you have your own product or a special event, it’s then time to pay for some real advertising.

Of course the best and fastest way of doing all of this, is to get a mentor. Sure it’s not cheap, but it will help you achieve success a thousand times faster

The Disadvantages Of Attending A University

We have discussed some of the wonderful advantages that university life and educations present. However, we must in turn discuss some of the other disadvantages that are associated with university learning as well. While we discuss these you should keep in mind that they do not by any means indicate that you should give up on your higher education goals, only that you should view your educational process with realistic expectations.

When compared with the community college system the very first and most distinctive disadvantage that comes to mind is the high cost of upper education on the university level. Community colleges are simply more cost effective all around than universities. The costs go well beyond that money that would be spent on room and board making the tuition alone cost prohibitive in many cases. While there are many types of financial aid available to students the vast majority of college students in this country make ends meet through the use of student loans, which must be repaid at quite a hefty interest rate, in order to cover the costs associated with university educations.

Beyond the one obvious disadvantage there are a few other disadvantages that bear mentioning in this particular circumstance. First of all, universities do not have the small intimate classroom settings that literally set community colleges apart. In fact, for lower level course, most universities offer large auditorium classes that are taught by graduate students rather than professors and more often than not the students never get to know those who are charged with their education on more than a nod and smile while passing in the halls basis. This method for learning is considered by many to be exceptionally inferior and the statistics prove that students who go straight into a four-year college environment rather than going through a community college first are far less likely to complete their degrees.

If that isn’t enough of a disadvantage, many people find that the impersonal atmosphere of most universities is quite limiting when it comes to interaction with other students. The smaller classroom environments of community colleges invite interaction between the students in the class. An open line of communication within the classroom is greatly preferred to having so many students that no one gets a voice or the ability to voice their opinions or personal experiences when it comes to certain topics.

Another disadvantage to university life is the sheer size of university campuses. Community colleges tend to be much more compact. This means that students have a fairly decent chance of making it to all classes on time and without the worry of walking 2 miles in ten minutes. While this is great for physical fitness, missing the first ten minutes of class each week can limit the educational process that your university experience should be providing. It seems like such a small thing on one hand but when you are hauling around a day’s worth of textbooks and a laptop–that hike can be the thing that marines seem dubious about accomplishing.

While there are a few distinctive disadvantages to university life, the fact remains that graduation from a university is the single biggest way to increase your earning potential over the course of your lifetime. The amounts are by no means insignificant. I highly recommend whenever possibly that you attend community college for the first two years of your college education. Beyond that, I strongly urge you to consider the value that completing your education and getting a four-year degree can provide.

If you wish to build self-confidence, earning potential, and job security, there is no way of doing so that is superior to getting a four-year degree. It doesn’t matter where you are in life or your career; it is never too late to begin getting your education. There are so many things in the world that a good education will open your eyes to in addition to the doors of opportunity a four-year degree will open.
